Planting in Rows

I tried an experiment in my poly tunnel, nothing as radical as liposculpture, or so I thought. I put in this absolutes adorable little 1 meter by 2 meter raised bed, and I planted an Asian salad mixture. The thing is that instead of planting the seeds in straight rows, I planted them in two zig zag lines across the bed. After I did it, I thought a lot about why people plant in straight lines. One of the big things is that if there are weeds in the bed, when you plant in straight lines you are able to see where the plants are coming up and where the weeds are coming up. On another bed, the bed needed soil improvement, so I mixed in a constellation formation green manure and root vegetables. On this bed it is impossible really to tell what is what until the plants are well established and able to be identified.Back in the zig zag bed, I planted different plants in the spaces left in the zig zags and am very happy with how they are coming along. I have been influenced by French intensive gardening which uses a very loose highly enriched soil where you grow plants much closed together than in a traditional English formation. It is meant to grow a lot of food within a limited amount of space, and I think it is an optimal solution to the long waiting lists at most allotments these days. With more intensive methods, people could get by with less space.
